Pueblo West Rotarians Diana, Bruce, Dean, and Dave worked at the Pueblo Community Soup Kitchen on 7th Street Saturday morning of August 23rd. Over 110 meals were served. Duties included cleaning and chopping fruits and vegetables, mixing drinks, cleaning bathrooms, and serving folks. Donuts with coffee and juice were served at about 9 am. Lunch was served promptly at 11:15. The operation is clean and well organized. It is run by enthusiastic staff and volunteers. It is amazing and heartwarming to see the quantity and variety of food donations that comes in from grocery stores, restaurants, caterers, and individuals. They try to use almost anything that is fit and safe for consumption. The cook does a wonderful job of concocting tasty and appealing meals that are nutritious and well balanced. It is an interesting logistics exercise to watch decisions being made as to what gets served today, what gets prepped for the next few days, and what goes into cold or frozen storage for future use. On top of that they inventory and catalog everything on the fly. This soup kitchen also supports other community food programs such as PCC’s student pantry and food kitchens in other towns. The clientele is varied and no questions are asked as far as admittance. While there was a preponderance of males there is a broad diversity of men, women, and children. A moderate dress code is enforced, prayer is said before the meal, and seconds are given out if there is enough food left over. The clients were friendly and polite as were all of the staff and volunteers. At the end of the meal a cadre of clients voluntarily cleans up the dining area. A second group of Pueblo West Rotarians will be working there this Saturday the 30th of August.
